BelleauBanter Fall 2001 Newsletter

Our prayers and sympathy goes out to everyone impacted by the terrorist acts of September 11th.  We were all affected in some way by these acts of evil against the innocent.  Many people have asked me and others "where was God's hand in this".   As I watched the second jet hit and the towers collapse, along with pain and sorrow, I was filled with the peace that comes from the knowledge that God was with the victims in those horrible minutes and hours during the tragedies, and He will be with their families and loved ones in the difficult days and years ahead.  Three e-mails circulating the internet capture what I felt.  September 11th has caused us all to stop and think again about our precious time here on earth.  We are blessed to have our God, family, friends, and our wonderfully peaceful alpacas in our lives.

God Bless America

We're Moving!

Erin has accepted a position with Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She will be working at BofA's corporate headquarters as a vice president of marketing information for the investments area.  She will be moving to North Carolina on October 15th.  Steve, Meg and the herd will stay in New York until mid-December and then will relocate to North Carolina.  We don't know yet if Steve will be called to full time service in the Vermont or North Carolina National Guard.

The farm is for sale.  It is a beautiful farm on the Vermont border and is already set up for an alpaca herd.  While we are not doing a dispersal sale, we will be more willing to negotiate on prices before the move.  Come see the herd and make an offer on your favorite alpaca!

Fall Foliage Open House

Saturday, Sept 22, 2001

Our 2001 Fall Foliage Open House was a great success.  Many thanks to all of the hard work from our partner farms and to all of you who came.  We were thrilled with the number of visitors who had already researched alpacas and came with some great questions.  We were blessed to have a birth right in the middle of the day, so visitors got the chance to see a birth in progress and the newborn cria.  I got lots of pictures of the event (click here to see pictures).  We will really miss working with the other wonderful alpaca farms in the area to put on this annual event.

New Breeder's Seminar

Sunday, Sept 23, 2001

This year, we added a new event to our Fall Foliage Open House.  On Sunday, we offered a New Breeder's Seminar to those who were interested in finding out more about alpaca ownership and care.  The seminar was organized by Linda Ley of Parris Hill Farm and hosted by the Callens of Mettowee Valley Farm.  Dr. Mary Menard DVM, who had provided alpaca care for the Deckers and Bates for several years, chaired an excellent discussion about alpaca health care including a hands on demo of body scoring.  The day concluded with a breeder's panel were several of us answered questions about the industry.  The event had 19 participants and was very successful.  We hope all who attended found it to be a valuable day.

2001 Spring Shearing

This Spring, we sheared 40 alpacas.  After rescheduling numerous times because of severe rain, we finally had our shearing day.  Esther Friedman came to do the shearing.  Because of a last minute cancellation, Jenny and Les Foshay, of Bridport VT were also able to come and help us get everyone shorn before the rains began again.  With 8 adults (2 of which were shearing), a teenager, and two kids, we were able to complete the task in about 8 hours and be done before the rains came again.   Many thanks to Esther, Jenny, Les, Tino and Evelyn for all their help.  For more shearing photos and an explanation of the shearing process, click here.

AOBA Marketing

Erin is a new member of the AOBA Marketing Committee.  The committee is lucky to have many highly qualified sales, marketing, and advertising professionals on board.  I think we will be able to accomplish great things for the industry in the coming year.  I hope to be able to make a difference for all AOBA members, particularly the smaller start-up farmer on a tight budget.   I welcome any ideas you have for future activities for AOBA marketing.  mccarthys@belleauwood.com

Peruvian Genesis

We are proud to announce our purchase of future herdsire Peruvian Genesis from John and Lyn Callen of Mettowee Valley Farm.  John and Lyn bred this beautiful boy by pairing their female, Peruvian Esprit, with Maple Brook Farm's famous herdsire Bueno.  We chose to name this boy Genesis because we hope that he provides the foundation for a long line of beautiful, show winning colored alpacas with exceptional fiber qualities.  Bueno is well known for producing crias with outstanding fiber in many different shades.  Genesis has a brown spot that indicates that he also will be able to pass on color genetics to his crias.  This, combined with his beautiful fiber qualities, should produce a winning combination.  We can't wait to add him to our herdsire lineup in 2003.  Boy, alpaca breeding sure does take patience!

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Callens for their friendship and support.
